Whatever how fantastic design you made, a dialogue with client to figure out more information is essential and significant.

—— —— topic

Team working

Although Our team made a series of good design for Brian- our client and also course leader, we didn’t know anything details about client specific needs in this project practice.

We were run for it directly without any considering when we got the subject title from Brian. Truthfully, the outcome of design is based on our hobbies and imagination but client. It couldn’t be a ‘design’ without background research.

What did I learn so far from this lesson?

Team work

Team presentation

I realized that The technology of design is not the most difficult part in team work but managing  the brain storming from many brains. As a team leader or member, How to be a good listener and how to make others accept your idea in a better way. These things are more hard to deal with but project would be worked out efficiently if you handle the key method.

  1. Trying to listen carefully what they say
  2. no mater how those are, write these down.
  3. question yourself whether this plan can be work
  4. If not, bringing the lack of plan up to the team, solve or change it.
Draft NO.1
Draft NO.2

Back to us, our plan started from lateral thinking to freewheeling. Lateral thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. The term was coined in 1967 by Edward de Bono. According to de Bono, lateral thinking deliberately distances itself from standard perceptions of creativity as either “vertical” logic (the classic method for problem solving: working out the solution step-by-step from the given data) or “horizontal” imagination (having many ideas but being unconcerned with the detailed implementation of them). It means that we use our imagination to created a plan by writing some words which are coherent relations with topic. It does not mater to make sure it works. Moreover, we were trying to make a plan how to design a system with these key words to move forward——a real plan.

Plan 01
Special design

We collaborated very well within this part. Definitely, we noticed problems many times. I found that working efficient would decreased when we were stocked and everyone keep thinking with silence. However, the working phenomenon turned to positive way when someone broke the silence. Then, solutions came up one by one to solve problems.

This project is so impressive and interesting. I’ve learn a lot in this processing. It is better way to do self-reflection rather than someone tell you what to learn. Sometimes I think that I have already understand what I learn so far, but it is more clear when I write it down or thinking more after lesson. In addition, how to use it in other field rather than one part.

Brief#1_International Pedagogy

When I get this brief, I was thinking how could I give a presentation in a different perspective rather than a simple tourist’s way. I come from XI’AN in SHANNXI Province in China. Acctually, it is a small historical city with many popular local landmarks and heritage culture but i want show something unusual what people would not see and know in there as tourists. I want talk about the changing of citizens influenced by history culture by generations.

China has 5000 years history which obviously had many emperors in the past time. There are 13 dynasties set up their capitals in XI’AN especially the first emperor in China named Qin. Emperors would be buried with many stuffs even alive people when they dead in case they would feel lonely and make sure they would also have good quality life in other “place”. That is a crazy ‘tradition’ to me. Moreover, these alive people all from their servants, mistress and wifes even all of beautiful girls in the country just due to they are superme emperors. Qin buried the largest group of people and over 50% are women, what is the reason caused by?

Defination of patriarchal

According to cambridge dictionary, patriarchal means controlled by men, men power. Back to thousand years ago, people are living with fighting with each other, for foods, areas, authorities. Absolutly, women are weakness than men physically. So men controlled everything includ women. As popular ancient capital city which been chosed several times, the citizens were effected by this culture deeply untill now.

Local adage

XI’AN is famous for history and local foods especially noodles. There is a local adage called “the way’training’ a good wife= the way kneading a good dough”. It means that the secret of making al dente noodles is shaping by strength which this the same way to do with wife —— beat them.

Previous generation_grandma

Take my family as example, my grandma played a role as housewife and sacrificed her everything to the family but never get respect. Sometimes, she could suffer domestic violence by grandpa for some ridiculous reasons to me but normal to their generation.

My mother is a business women with her own company and grow the family with dad together. My father never force mother even she bossying. Mother is a independed women outside but she would pretend to be a housewife and look up father when she face to my father’s friends. This phenomenon have been changed alot but ‘culture’ influenced her so deep even in her blood.

The diagram shows the employment of female from 15 to 24 from 1991 to 2018, the number is decreasing and continuing. People have to accept educating until 15 years old caused by law of 9 year compulsory rducation. Before decades ago, people think that it is unnecessary to make girls knowledgeable. So, they have to work after 15 years old. But this situation absolutly changed a lot and keep changing. The decreacing data means that the girl likes me have more chance and own chose now and girl power is rising. That time is gone.

Reflection about presentation of visual analysis

There are some excellent work which I record and really want to show here to remember this experience.

Joko

Joko’s presentation is really impressive with perfect drawing and the slices are really appropriate organized as a good leader.

Julia

I have to say that Julia did the fantastic work there. I could tell that she spent much time on this. The most important is that she did research and defined ‘Leader’ before analyzing information. When she find out the result is not what she’s looking for, then she changed method to deal with that. That is a stunning work.

Yang

Yang is definitely a creator who present in a special way. Although she is a little bit out of brief, she is so brave and won the applause from classes. The rhythm still keep resounding after her presentation.

Me!
Feedback from classes

As for today’s presentation, I’ve learnt a lot from our classes. They did really well. Their drawing and analysis is logical and creative.

There are some mistakes i made and improve more.

1.This presentation should not use the original photos. I read brief before but totally forgot it when i work it. I should deal with it carefully. And it is really unprofessional with wrong spelling which i need double check before present.

2.Further more, according to feedback I need analyse more data information with dialogues but more body language with psychology analysis.

3.I should do more practices before present it. I thought i can but my brain was blanket in the middle part and lost my step. Fortunately, I sort it at the end. It’s really hard but I did it.

I took the lesson this time and hopefully i won’t fell down with same problem next time.

Archive workshop

⚪ What is Archive?

I think it’s really helpful come up with question first before get answer directly. Everyone has different definition in their mind. For me, it’s the unique records about historical working stuff and primary research. From my knowledge, materials of archive have books, DVD(videos/radios), photographies, models, magazines and newspapers. Looking through various archive documents to understand what kinds of materials are archive including.

⚪Processing

I analysed 6 archives based on some essencial questions to get reference and understand well. They are zine book, artists books, business card, AIDS research, dialogue document, jelly baby brand respectively.

Analysing records

What makes me feel interesting is zine books. They seems like handmade by students to express self perspective. The form of processing expression include: photography, hand drawing, literature, poster and so on. Moreover, the materials of book used hardpaper and plastic.

Prehistoric man documents on table 5 are very impressive. The archive shows that history researching and the layout of books before publishing with attached photo cuttings, hand writings, sketching and diagrams. Obviously, I could dirctly see and feel how to make the processing by diversity ways.

This lecture is really helpful for my brife 3 working. I’ve learned how to find archives online, how to reference details about archives. I hope that I could get inspiration in the Archive library.

Analysing-Visual Statistics

⚪Analysing categories

102.KIller yes/no

we analyzed a series of photos which were taken by Tom as visual categories on last friday. Selin and I chose a group of people to analyze who chose yes in number 102 category named ‘killer’. There are some interesting information via discovering. From their body language and face expression, we might find out some personal details.

⚪Killer

Generally, the person turn tobe a killer is reasonable. The reason might based on his or her experience or suffered before. They were build by family, society and surroundings. This group of people might influenced by relevant movies who think it is so cool to be a killer or kill someone.

The killer seems like a cold blood person with tatoo and fear of nothing, easily get angry and loose patient and feel sad. In my perspective, killers might are introvert person and don’t like communicate with others.

⚪How to analyse?

We were trying to figure out the personality of killer through the images. Are they exactly like what I believe they are? In the categories, most of them believe that they are daredevil and drink alcohol and love money . That’s definitely what typical killers sounds like.

However, they all think they are funny people and lover rather than modernist· only one person in the group has tatoo. Most of them fear of pain and high. This phenomenon makes me think that these appearance are unable to judge a person is good or bad about their characters.

72.Happy/Sad

The most weird thing is that almost all of them think they are happy and extrovert but they show sad face. Maybe they want be happy person or make people think they are happy and easy going.

This analysis processing is quite interesting. The result of analysing depends on categories chosing and the method using. This analysing is not in-depth. I am trying to find out more details in next further.

⚪Presentation practice

Presentation feedback

Challeng-Visual statistics

I think statistic is a key tool providing in-depth understanding for designers on marketing, brands and clients’ needs, like researching. But this time, the information and data are on the pictures – visual.

Framework, Chen(2019)

Through self understanding and almost 140 categories which came up by whole class, team work completed well on visual statistic challenge on 11th October. All of the categories were chosen from our appearance, gender, hobbies, individual thoughts. Based on different personal background and experience, the result of visual statistics are complicate. It clearly shows on surface that the past of our life what we were been through. That might influence our personalities, characters and hobbies even our every decision. At the end of the project, we should collect information and analysehe data to get a result.

It took a long time to collect information but a essential step. Team work is supposed to be efficient but sometimes it is little bit difficult to organize 18 people at same time. I think that reason is lack of communication between peers. Fortunately, thing went well when we corporate together. During the processing, we also decided to delete some of categories due to repeating, meaningless and unfit our experience.

I understand that I should consider about ‘why do this?’, ‘what is meaning?’ before doing every project. Moreover, communication and discussion of group work are essential for team work which could make the result more precision through adjust and delete categories. At present, I am looking forward our satistic photos and figure out how to analyze them.

DIBM – Annoying thing

Find a small annoying thing

Figure1. Traditional british water faucet

The Britain water faucet confuse me all the time, why the British people use this type of water faucet with separate hot tap and cold type.

⚪ Pretest

Both of water temperature are unacceptable for me. The hot one likes touching magma from volcano and using cold water feels like touch iceberg without any protection.

⚪ Analysis

—How it work? & Why this category?

Figure2. water system

Generally, cold water is directly from but hot water separated in water storage tank. The storage have tust and too dusty without keeping repair but cold water is clean enough for drinking.

Figure3. water faucet categories (Chen)

⚪Positive and negative

According to Toryism Boris Johnson(2016), the British would like washing hand with cold water which provides courage to conquer difficulties.

Temperature is unacceptable and non-humanization.

⚪ Promote

Figure4.hand writting (Chen)

After searching many categories of water faucet, all of the them should be adjusted by ourselves. I think if it is possible, it is a better way to connect radiation thermometer with water tap. When hands approach to tap, the radiation system enable to test hands temperature first then serve the appropriate water temperature.

Sustainable design

As for my main course is Innovation and brand management, so I plan to find three example of sustainable design in various way.

From the researching, I realised that recycling becomes the whole world assessment due to cliamte changing changed into crisis. Some designer make furnitures or other products with mushrooms and other waste. I think that it is really a effective way to deal with the garbage and producing with less pollution. It’s totally ‘two wins’.

Innovation design

Jacob Turetsky designed this chair by using 3D printing. The idea of first chair is from ‘Venus’ flower basket’ – a deep sea sponge. In this way, the stool is more light and comfortable. I am really interested by his use of 3D printing to avoid materials waste through practicing. Moreover, the chair utilises 24% less water, 99% less GHG emissions and 4.3kg less waste by comparing with traditional manufacturing methods. Using a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) – which confirms and quantifies the land, climate, water and energy impacts for the entire design and production process from materials sourcing to transportation to manufacturing to actual use. I choose that because this innovation design not only changed the way to making furnitures but also remission pollution during products progressing.

Changing materials

The second stool by Paul Sukphisit

This art design is fabulous due to designer use mycelium from mushrooms to make chair. This could grows between two different fibre to create composite blocks which made the shape of this stool. As for LCA, this utilises 28% less water, 77% less GHG emissions. I do not think this product is beautiful but the idea of the method is good for the environment.

In process of producing packages, plastics are easily to make and complete in a short time. However, we all know that would take thousand years despairing even not. Therefore, producing is significant to our environment rather than only pay attention to recycling. In addition, material closing and production processing are also could be a useful method in the future.

Changing the thinking way

There is a good thinking from the popular brand named Lush. They care about ocean plastic and wonder stoping new plastic production. Then they wants to use cork pots instead of aluminium pots and also change the deliver way of their products by sail cargo. Both of these methods would limited the production of producing plastic rather than passively recycling waste products.

Thomas Heatherwick

Architect – Thomas Heatherwick

I realised that most of my favourite architectures and artworks are built by Thomas Heatherwick until watching his Ted Talk yesterday. He is a shining star for me due to his ability of designing. I will introduce two of his projects which make me impressive.

Seed cathedral 2010

Seeds cathedral (2010)

The most popular project in China is seeds cathedral which built in Shanghai in 2010 World Expo. Most of people might not interested in the exterior of architecture. Honestly, I don’t like it either many years ago. But the design and concept is sustainable.

The sketch of cathedral by Thomas
Model making

There are 66,000 acrylic tubes projecting from the wall in t center. These tubes would wiggle with wind. What amazing is that there are no lampes inside of building. Thomas use the day light through these tubes lighting internal space in the morning. In addition, the LED white light enable to illumination at night. I could get some thought from this kind of notional design.

Furthermore, he considered visitors’ walking streamline by using hard paper and raising the ground to make a room for people take a break and parking. I could tell the architect is really good at using space.

Power station 2009

Generally, the power station is forbidden zone for general public. However, Thomas broke my traditional concept with this project.

Sketch of power station

The design perspective comes from volcano. He combined seperate stations together with that shape. And also rase the ground of public park outside to inspire people coming inside of building. Because of surrounding view of the power station is very mesmerising. Thinking outside the box is the rarified ability but essential capability for the architects and art workers. In my opinion, I think sometimes the shape of building might not extraordinary while the concept and method is beyond everything.

Absorbing artworks of Tate Modern

Chapter1: Tate Modern

By Chen (2019)
Building Sketch By Chen (2019)

Before Friday trip, I did some researches of Tate Modern. Tate was the bankside power station before as the contemporary Art Museum site in 1994. And this building became one of the most popular gallery in London as a landmark.

Chapter2: Visual Images

At the beginning, I thought that picture just shows different phonomenon of bright lights. But after oberving for a while. The painting would be altered by light changing. It is very interesting.

And also this artwork is a 3D paper work which could show different three images by changing positions. I think the meaning of product is similar with my pre-session. General public should change their own perception to see different opinion.

As for this project, i did not find any introduction there. But through the title ‘How do we live together’ and mirror on the roof, I guess that artist wants to show the earth where we live and all of us live in the same space and environment. I think that project might make people get more closer with each other in there.

Chapter3: Climate change – Olafur Eliasson

There are many of project from Olafur shows CLIMATE CHANGE in different angle.

When i walk out from elevator, I was almost blind by the shining lamps. It was a real ‘Yellow world’ in the corridor. To be honest, it is beautiful but i didn’t get any information from this exhibition at that monment. And espesially my eyes were uncomfortable when i stay there for a long time. When i came back home, i searched online to figure out what exactly happened there. Acctually that space express the rising temperature effected by global warming and the yellow lamps are instead of the sunlight. What a fantistic idea. Vistors could feel the ‘sunlight’ inside of space ahead of time before global warming become more serious in the future. I consider that people should reflect their behaviors what they did to the environment.

Inside of the exhibition, I have to say that is really heaven of architecture. All of these model made by various materials, such as hard paper, iron wire, carton and banboo. Some of them could be built in real life. From artist pre-research, I could clearly see there are many researching of shaping cubes before the model making. I have learnt that the pre-work is the one of the most significant and esstensial step in a project. Otherwise, project is not perfect and complete.

‘Fog walk’ is one of my favorite interactive exhibitions. Vistors and I was walking through a length 39-meters corridor and I could not see anything beyond the end of my arm. I quite like the feeling inside of space which create a unsearchable space.

pre-research

This picture of Tiananmen Square in 2013-2014 reminds me the atmosphere in ‘Fog walk’. That situation happened few years ago in Beijing. I think that i could feel the feeling of local people when they walking on the street and living in that evironment. They could not see anything just like what i experienced few minuets ago. I could tell that residents desire appropriated environment rather than the space full of air pollution. After study his pre-research, the exhibition becomes more impressive than only walking through the corridor without thinking.

“give feelings to things that are otherwise unemotional and encourage governments, big business and the public to act on climate change. ” —  Olafur Eliasson

In my mind, emotion is colorful. I thought this artist must want stimulate all the audience to make them blend into these project. I think this is a better way to get visitor attention and make them interested to consider the effection of climate changing.

The iceberg were melting in Greenland because of climate changing. I agree with the artist touched people by proformance show. Most of people who do not live in Greenland, could not understand deeply using imagination. This method could let people feel more reailty by direcly touching, smelling, kissing and watching the fragile ice melting in front of them.

Ice Watch – Dezeen.com

I think that passagers could feel personally what exactly does climate changing means and what kind of effects could it created. Furthermore, what can i do to reduce the situation happened above in the field of my main course in the future – Innovation and brand management? I think that i need more time to clear up my mind and the inspirtion from this wonderful exhibition before I make a decision.
